Starting at 2nd, Joe DeMaestri...

Because of an injury to Bobby Richardson and Billy Gardner with the Twins, Joe DeMaestri got the start at 2nd and batted 8th for the Yankees against the Angels. You may ask, who hit leadoff for the Yankees on this memorable Tuesday afternoon in the Bronx? Mickey Mantle. 2-4, leadoff homer in the 1st(5), then a 2-run-homer in the 9th(6) that cut the Angel lead to 5-3. Before I go any further, Ned Garver had retired 20 Yanks in a row before the Yank comeback. Roger Maris walked with 2 outs, forcing Bill Rigney to take out Garver, replacing him with Art Fowler to face Bill Skowron. Did I mention the "Moose" was fairly clutch? Yankees 5, Angels 5, end of 9th. After the Angels loaded the bases in the 10th off of Luis Arroyo on 2 walks and a HBP, pinch-hitter Steve Bilko put a "Sarge" into a ball in right field with 2 out. Roger Maris hauled it in. After Clete Boyer lined to 3rd and DeMaestri flied to left, up stepped Elston Howard who had pinch-hit a single leading off t...

Highlights from the Colisuem

Top of the 1st(bases empty, 2 outs) HARRY CARAY: "The pitch to Bill White, swung on and hit deep to left, it might be out of here, it could be, IT IS! A home run for White has given the Cards an early 1-0 lead over the Dodgers! Holy Cow!  Top of the 2nd(runners at 1st and 2nd, 0 out, Don Taussig batting) CARAY: "The wind and the pitch, swung on and hit deep to left, it might be out of here, it could be, IT IS! Proper bunt execution is a must...

In a Cleveland-Washington recreation, the Indians had two golden opportunities to bunt with a 3-0, then 3-2 lead; what were the odds that with each bunt attempt the roll would be 6-6? Proper bunt execution is not only a must in real baseball, it is also a must in Strat. For that particular game which ended up going 11 innings, the Indians scalped themselves with 5 DP's, 2 of which were on the bunt, Of course, they would also lose that 3-0 lead and that game.  I also teased in my last post that I would post CWS-DET, I'll say briefly that it resembled more of a Lions-Bears game on an ugly October afternoon with this line score: CWS 2-3-0 DET 1-2-2(WP-Early Wynn LP-Jim Bunning). All that was missing was Alex Karras killing Jack Concannon.
