WGN Sports presents...

JACK BRICKHOUSE: "Aparicio in the batters box, getting ready to face old teammate Dick Donovan in the National opener from Washington. Donovan winds, here's the pitch, swung on and hit to left, Woodling is there, one away. Aparicio flies to left, one away, here's Nellie Fox, lefty facing righty here in this matchup. The pitch to Fox swung on and popped to 2nd, O'Connell's got it, 2 down. Donovan has retired the first 2, here's our old buddy, Minnie Minoso. Looks great after another spring training. doesn't he? The pitch to Minnie, grounded to Veal at short, throws to Long to retire the side in order. Nothing across, after half a inning, Sox 0, Senators coming to bat. Let's take a look at opening day in the Land of Sky Blue Waters, shall we?(Hamm's commercial)"  BRICKHOUSE: "Bottom of the 1st, Early Wynn pitching opening day again here in Washington. 20 in a row...

These days, I'm experimenting with opening day 1961 rosters featuring players who were on a team's opening roster, but who later played with the team they ended up with in the S-O-M season set. I decided maybe I better replay the 1961 World Series based on the actual lineup for a change of pace. A couple of guys named Don Blasingame and Jim O'Toole threw me for an absolute curve ball: CIN 9-13-0 NYY 1-3-0 -O'Toole CG, 5 strikeouts, retired the last 20 Yanks! -Blasingame 3-run homer in the 5th capped a 7-run inning. -Every Red starter except O'Toole had at least one hit. -Whitey Ford hit 3 Reds. Bring on game 2!
