Early's a Wynn-er...

In yet another Opening Day 1961 reboot, I may have outdid myself, having Early Wynn pitch a 4-hit, 9k masterpiece against the team he broke in with, Washington. No doubt a performance like that would generate the following:  David Brinkley: "President Kennedy threw out the first pitch today here in Washington, then Dick Donovan threw out a few more, bobbling one of them for an error. Early Wynn threw a few more for the visiting White Sox, they were effective, thus the Sox's 4-0 triumph this afternoon. He struck out 9, allowed 4 hits as the native of Alabama's "Wiregrass" scored his 285th career win. The way the Senators hit, you'd think for bats they were using wire brushes. Good night, Chet."  Jack Brickhouse: "Early, you struck out Willie Tasby 3 times today, but finally got him to hit one in the 9th. What did you say to him after the game?" Wynn: "Well Jack, I told him he deserved a break after all those strikeouts, so I finally ga...

Game 1 in DC...

Sens nip White Sox in successful DC opener, 6-5 WASHINGTON, Apr 10-Jim Mahoney's RBI single to right field scored Pete Daley with what turned to be the winning run as the 2nd incarnation of Washington Senators nipped the Chicago White Sox in the National opener, 6-5.  Reliever Dick Sisler got the win in relief of Senator starter Dick Donovan, who was followed by Marty Kutnya; the Sox used their bullpen from the 2nd inning on after starter Early Wynn exited with a wrist injury while batting in the inning. Turk Lown took the loss. Al Smith singled 3 times, while JC Martin and Jim Landis each homered in the 6th, sparking a 3-run Sox uprising. Senator fans were all smiles when Sisler recorded the final out, getting Luis Aparicio to force to Sens shortstop Coot Veal to end the game.  WSH 6-8-0 CWS 5-12-2 WP-Sisler(1-0) LP-Lown(0-1) HR-Martin(1) Landis(1) INJ-Wynn(CWS, out 4 games)

PHI-LAD 2: "Bisons" stun Dodgers again in 10, 4-3...

Dodgers blow a 3-1 lead, game to Phils for the 2nd night in a row in extra innings by a score of 4-3. Philly scored solo runs in the 8th, 9th(PH homer with 2 outs by Wes Covington tying the score) and 10th on a double by C Clay Dalrymple scoring Bobby Gene Smith. Here's what "consultant" Leo Durocher said after the game:  "Walt(Alston) left Podres in too long; I knew when Rosey homered in the 7th to extend that lead, that the game wasn't over. He should've taken Johnny out in the 8th when Philly got to within 1, and wouldn't you know in the 9th, 2 outs, Covington takes Johnny deep and Bavasi just sits in his office playing pinochle while we lose 2 in a row to the Buffalo Bisons. If I were Buzzie, I'd cancel kid's day Sunday and replace it with a wake."  Alston: "Leo's job is to consult, not poke his head into my damn business. I still felt Johnny was pitching well, so did he for that matter, it is way too early to point fingers and...
