Sens nip White Sox in successful DC opener, 6-5
WASHINGTON, Apr 10-Jim Mahoney's RBI single to right field scored Pete Daley with what turned to be the winning run as the 2nd incarnation of Washington Senators nipped the Chicago White Sox in the National opener, 6-5.
Reliever Dick Sisler got the win in relief of Senator starter Dick Donovan, who was followed by Marty Kutnya; the Sox used their bullpen from the 2nd inning on after starter Early Wynn exited with a wrist injury while batting in the inning. Turk Lown took the loss. Al Smith singled 3 times, while JC Martin and Jim Landis each homered in the 6th, sparking a 3-run Sox uprising.
Senator fans were all smiles when Sisler recorded the final out, getting Luis Aparicio to force to Sens shortstop Coot Veal to end the game.
