Dodgers-Phils post-game recap, 4-12-1961

Vin Scully: "As Hollywood debuts go, this one was an eye-opener as Hollywood native Frank Sullivan stunned the Dodgers tonight with dominant pitching, backed up by an Phillie attack that provided 11 hits and a pivotal 5th inning rally where 5 runs on 6 consecutive hits left Johnny Podres shell-shocked and in the showers.  How dominant was Sullivan? 12 in a row retired from the 2nd to the 5th inning and the final 10 in a row to close the 8-3 win. The only hiccup was provided by Tommy Davis, who drove in all 3 Dodgers runs in the only innings where Sullivan was really, really bad(mini-Ed Sullivan impersonation), the 1st and 6th. Sullivan also struck out 5 and walked 1.  Now comes tomorrow night and the rubber game, where Roger Craig will try to right the ship, opposed by fellow righty Art Mahaffey. Hollywood debut...

Frank Sullivan of the Phillies on making his Phils debut in front of his hometown fans at the Coliseum: "Growing up in Hollywood, you were lucky if you saw a star every other day. Since they had the big stars out last night, who knows, maybe Marilyn Monroe's limo driver shows up tonight? I got family cheering me on, so it won't be too bad."

Richard C. Hottelet(CBS News): "27-year old Soviet cosmonaut Maj. Yuri Alekseyvitch Gagarin successfully orbited the earth this morning, becoming the 1st astronaut to do so, after a 89-minute trip. The triumphant astronaut said afterward that he was "feeling fine." More later on this CBS station."

Dodgers-Phillies Post-game. 4-11-1961

Vin Scully: "In the American League, the expansion LA Angels scored a run in the 10th to beat the Baltimore Orioles in their inaugural game, 6-5. Ted Kluszewski hit a 2-run homer to pace the upstart Halos, while Gus Triandos belted a 3-run shot for the Orioles. Art Fowler over Hoyt Wilhelm, with our sincere congratulations to Gene Autry and Bill Rigney.  In Detroit, Jim Bunning kept the Indians off the warpath with a complete game 2-hitter as the Tigers scored a 4-1 win at Tiger Stadium. Jim Perry took the loss for Cleveland, surrendering a 3-run homer by former Rocky Colavito, while Willie Kirkland homered for the lone Cleveland tally. At The Bronx, Pedro Ramos and the Twins made a successful debut as a Minnesota team, while making Ralph Houk's debut as Yankee skipper unsuccessful with an 8-4 win. Jim Lemon, Lenny Green and Bill Tuttle all homered off Yankee starter and loser Whitey Ford, while Ramos went the distance. At Fenway Park, Jackie Jensen in his first game since ...
