Nothing personal, but...

When I do 1961 re-creates, I get put off by certain things. One thing, the injury rolls can be pretty jarring, even if that player was active in that time frame, I still find it astonishing that in the 2nd game of a re-create, I can be without Roberto Clemente for 10/15 games. Or a team such as the 1961 Giants can bat .433 over their 1st 3 games. I want to re-create as close as possible an actual season, but a curve here and there has me starting from scratch again. It's nothing personal, but I am back in Washington again, Wynn vs. Donovan, and by "nothing personal," I mean it. Donovan, who used to pitch for the Sox, stifled the Sox on 4 hits, and better yet, homered and doubled(including the eventual winning run) in a 4-1 win over CWS. The one thing I wanted to prove was how do the Sox do against a pitcher with a +6 hold like Donovan? 3 stolen bases was the answer, but in the end it was "nothing personal."

PITTSBURGH PIRATES PRESS RELEASE TO BE RELEASED TO ALL MEDIA APRIL 12, 1961  San Francisco, CA-April 12  The ball club has placed RF Roberto Clemente on the 10-day disabled list after he sprained his right wrist hitting a line drive in the second inning of this afternoon's ballgame in San Francisco. His absence covers the games from April 12(today) to April 22 against Milwaukee at Forbes Field. He is scheduled to return for the April 23 game against Milwaukee at Forbes Field. It is unfortunate to have this injury early in the season, but we want him to have the proper rest before he rejoins the lineup. Donn Clendenon, Joe Christopher and Walt Moryn will all take turns filling in for Clemente until his return.  For Immediate Release Public Relations Department Pittsburgh Pirates Baseball Club Pittsburgh, PA

Pirates Flogged by Giants, 12-4 3-run second inning lone bright spot as Bucs title defense begins on sour note By Jack Hernon, Post-Gazette Writer SAN FRANCISCO-Apr 11-They picked up where they left off in October with a 3-run second. Then, it was over. The Pirates title defense began on a promising note with a 3-run second inning, mostly fueled by Giant starter Sam Jones' shaky control and fielding, getting 4 walks and a error while managing just 1 hit off the righty. Pirate starter Bob Friend started well enough, retiring the first five Giants before he was "doubled" over, that is, he allowed back-to-back-to-back doubles to Ed Bailey, Chuck Hiller and Ed Bressoud, slicing the Buc lead to 3-2. Then in the 3rd, Friend lost the lead and eventually the game when Willie Mays singled in Felipe Alou, then Orlando Cepeda crushed a Friend offering towards Sausilito, signaling an onslaught in which the Jints would score in each subsequent inning, rendering the Pirate world...

CLE-DET 4-11-1961

Dawning of an New Error Tigers blunders cost them opener, 5-3 to Indians.  DETROIT, Apr 11-The Bob Scheffing era started today on the wrong foot at Tiger Stadium. Or should we say "error?"  3 untimely errors would be the ultimate wrongdoing as the Tigers dropped a 5-3 decision to Cleveland on a mostly miserable day in the Motor City. Nobody reflected that more than 3B Steve Boros,  who made errors in back-to-back innings in the 6th and 7th innings, the latter of which brought in a 2nd run that scored Johnny Romano with an insurance run after PH Chuck Essegian drove in what proved to proved to be the winner, scoring Bubba Phillips, who had singled to lead off the 7th. Boros and starter Jim Bunning were then both removed, Boros for defense, Bunning for running out of gas, but he was also guilty of a blunder in the 4th, a misplay of a grounder by Tito Francona which led off the inning and was followed by a single by Jimmy Piersall and a 3-run homer by off-season acquisi...

CWS-WSH Take 2

After a few "exhibitions," I decided to do CWS-WSH again, this time using a kinda/sorta "as played" as Early Wynn in the actual game pitched 2 innings before a "bullpen by committee" finished out the game. One wrinkle to that, Wynn's spot came up in the 2nd, I then PH for him, thus affecting a somewhat "perfect" result: -Don Larsen pitched 6 innings, allowing a couple of solo homers, retiring the last 7 batters he faced. -Warren Hacker then pitched the final 2 innings, retiring the last 6 batters of the game. -The Pale Hose scored 3 runs in the 3rd, 5th and 9th innings on 15 hits en route to a 9-2 win. CWS-WSH 4/10/61

From Error to Era  Senators hang on to nip White Sox in National opener, 5-4 WASHINGTON, Apr 10(AP)-It started out as an "error," then it ended up as the start of a new era as the Washington Senators hung on to beat the Chicago White Sox in the National opener in front of 25,000 fans at Griffith Stadium, 5-4. It started rather ominously as the new-look Senators reverted to their old tricks as starting pitcher Dick Donovan muffed a Luis Aparicio grounder, then the speedy shortstop stole 2nd, then 3rd before scoring on Minnie Minoso's sac fly to left. The Sox then scored 2 more in the 3rd on Aparicio's lead-off triple, followed by walks to Sammy Esposito and Roy Sievers, loading the bases with 1 out. JC Martin singled home Aparicio and Esposito, making the score 3-0 for veteran starter Early Wynn, who retired the first 9 Senators.  The Senators went to work in the 4th, getting a lead-off walk from Coot Veal, who promptly scored on a triple by Billy Klaus, who the...
