4-14-1961 BOB MURPHY: "Before we head to the bottom of the 9th, here's Herb Carneal with another Hamm's scoreboard update: Herb?" CARNEAL: "OK Murph, the Senators rallied for 2 in the 8th to beat Cleveland, 3-2, Dale Long with the go-ahead homer, Klippstein over Mudcat Grant. Earlier, Detroit beat the White Sox, 7-2, while over in the National League, Cincinnati leads St. Louis 9-7 after 4, Pirates-Dodgers, Phillies-Giants about to get underway and earlier it was Cubs 6, Braves 2. Murph?" MURPHY: "Ray Moore ready to go against the Orioles, his Twins lead it 5-4. Marv Breeding to lead it off followed by a pinch-hitter and Jackie Brandt. Breeding has singled and scored in 3 trips, Moore's ready, here the pitch, lined into right field, a base hit for Breeding to open the 9th. Jerry Adair will pinch-hit for Hoyt Wilhelm, the Twins will stick with Moore, who relieved Jim Kaat in the 8th. Adair awaits the pitch from Moore, here it comes, swung on and h...

A "Rosey" finish...

VIN SCULLY: "When they fly to San Francisco after this game, they better give Amaro a seat next to the pilot. 11 successive plate appearances before finally making an out. If Gene Mauch knew any better, he'd move him higher in the order. Amaro takes his place at short as the Dodgers come to bat here in the bottom of the 9th where they'll send Neal, Roseboro and a pinch-hitter, probably Fairly to face Art Mahaffey. (Charlie)Neal is 0 for 3 with 2 strikeouts, 2 of 8 that Mahaffey has thrown tonight. The kick, the pitch to Neal is swung on and hit to left, a base hit. The tying run is on, the winning run is at the plate. Rosey is 0 for 2 with a walk. Infield may or may not be expecting a bunt, Roseboro may have thoughts of ending this here. The wind and the pitch to Rosey… Swung on and hit deep to right field, Callison looks up, SHE IS GONE!  A welcoming committee greets Neal, then Rosey after the Dodger catcher hit a Mahaffey curve deep into the right field bleachers giving...

Amaro for MVP, part 2...

VIN SCULLY: "Before we head to the 9th, let's hear from Jerry." JERRY DOGGETT: "Thanks, Vinnie. In the American League, Detroit clobbered Cleveland 10-1, the White Sox handed Washington their first loss, 7-1, the Twins beat the Yankees again, 8-3 and Boston nipped Kansas City in 11, 4-3. In the National League, the Reds blanked the Cubs, 6-0, Milwaukee nipped St. Louis 8-7 in 10 innings and the Giants eked out a 2-1 win over the Pirates. Pirates come here tomorrow night, but let's go to the 9th, here's Vinnie."  VIN: "It'll be Callsion, Curry and Gonzalez to face Roger Craig here in the 9th. Callison is 0 for 3. The pitch to Callison is swung on and hit to right, Snider plays it on a bounce, on to second goes Callison with a stand-up double. I doubt we'll see Curry lay down a bunt, in the meantime a left-hander throws in the Dodger pen, that's Ron Perranoski. Curry has struck out twice in 3 trips against Craig, Gonzalez is on deck. The...

Amaro for MVP!

Jerry Doggett: "Now Lucky Strike brings you the top of the 8th inning with Vin Scully. Vinnie?" Scully: OK, Jerry. Roger Craig back for the top of the 8th, facing Amaro, Mahaffey and Sadowski. Dodgers lead it 1-0 as Amaro steps up, still not having been retired thru 3 games, 10 plate appearances with 7 singles and 3 walks. 2-2 tonight. The pitch to Amaro is swung on and hit to center field, Willie(Davis) sees it roll to the wall, Amaro rounds second, he'll stop at 3rd with a stand-up triple. Make that 8 for 8 in 11 plate appearances for the Phillie shortstop and now you have a dilemma facing Walt Alston, you have a runner on 3rd, a pitcher who's a good bunter in Art Mahaffey and a situation which almost certainly means infield in. Alston decides, "to heck with the infield in, I've seen enough of Amaro on the basepaths, if Mahaffey wants to lay down a bunt, fine. Let's just start from scratch" and wouldn't you know it, they're playing for a b...

Harvey Haddix just can't win...

Giants outduel Pirates, lose Mays to bruised wrist  Cepeda's homer, Sanford strikeout of Clemente seals win  SAN FRANCISCO, Apr 13(AP)-Orlando Cepeda's home run in the bottom of the 8th and the pitching of Jack Sanford helped give the Giants a riveting 2-1 win over the Pirates at Candlestick Park this afternoon. Cepeda's home run off Harvey Haddix came a half-inning after Smokey Burgess led off the Pirate 8th with a homer off Sanford. Sanford then retired the side in the 9th, capping it off by striking out Roberto Clemente, who had struck out twice previously and singled. The Giant win was marred by Haddix hitting Willie Mays with a pitch in the 5th, hitting the Giant slugger in the wrist,  leaving a bruise which Giant trainers thought wasn't too serious. Mays will sit out the next Giant game tomorrow night against the Phillies to rest the wrist, putting Matty Alou in center field.  Haddix struck out 11 Giants, his most in a game since 1958 and thought he pitc...
