Harvey Haddix just can't win...

Giants outduel Pirates, lose Mays to bruised wrist
Cepeda's homer, Sanford strikeout of Clemente seals win

SAN FRANCISCO, Apr 13(AP)-Orlando Cepeda's home run in the bottom of the 8th and the pitching of Jack Sanford helped give the Giants a riveting 2-1 win over the Pirates at Candlestick Park this afternoon. Cepeda's home run off Harvey Haddix came a half-inning after Smokey Burgess led off the Pirate 8th with a homer off Sanford. Sanford then retired the side in the 9th, capping it off by striking out Roberto Clemente, who had struck out twice previously and singled.

The Giant win was marred by Haddix hitting Willie Mays with a pitch in the 5th, hitting the Giant slugger in the wrist,  leaving a bruise which Giant trainers thought wasn't too serious. Mays will sit out the next Giant game tomorrow night against the Phillies to rest the wrist, putting Matty Alou in center field.

Haddix struck out 11 Giants, his most in a game since 1958 and thought he pitched his best outing since the 12-inning perfect game in 1959 saying to the press, "I guess I'm kinda used to it by now, pitching well but leaving empty-handed. Sanford pitched a fantastic game, too."

Tom Haller also homered for the Giants, the rookie catcher hitting his first career home run.
