BOB MURPHY: "Before we head to the bottom of the 9th, here's Herb Carneal with another Hamm's scoreboard update: Herb?"
CARNEAL: "OK Murph, the Senators rallied for 2 in the 8th to beat Cleveland, 3-2, Dale Long with the go-ahead homer, Klippstein over Mudcat Grant. Earlier, Detroit beat the White Sox, 7-2, while over in the National League, Cincinnati leads St. Louis 9-7 after 4, Pirates-Dodgers, Phillies-Giants about to get underway and earlier it was Cubs 6, Braves 2. Murph?"
MURPHY: "Ray Moore ready to go against the Orioles, his Twins lead it 5-4. Marv Breeding to lead it off followed by a pinch-hitter and Jackie Brandt. Breeding has singled and scored in 3 trips, Moore's ready, here the pitch, lined into right field, a base hit for Breeding to open the 9th. Jerry Adair will pinch-hit for Hoyt Wilhelm, the Twins will stick with Moore, who relieved Jim Kaat in the 8th. Adair awaits the pitch from Moore, here it comes, swung on and hit to left field, Dan Dobbek is there, one away. Breeding holds at 1st, here's Jackie Brandt, who is 0-for-4 on the evening. Moore winds, the pitch to Brandt is swung on and hit up the middle for a base hit. Breeding will hold at 2nd, moving the tying run into scoring position for Earl Robinson, who has a three-run homer in this one and may have thoughts of doing it again as Earl Battey wants to talk it over with his batterymate, a conversation Cookie Lavagetto decides to join. The umpire breaks up the conversation and we're ready to go with Earl.
The wind from Moore, the pitch to Earl Robinson... He struck him out. 2 away, Robinson swung at it, but reached the glove before it would reach the bat. The Orioles are down to their last out and here's Brooks Robinson, who has singled in 4 trips. Outfield playing Brooks shallow. The wind and the pitch to Brooks, swung on and hit to Center, Lenny Green's on the run, he dives... HE DROPS THE BALL!!! Breeding rounds 3rd, he scores the tying run, Brandt stops at 3rd, Brooks is at 2nd, we are tied at 5! Looked like the ball hit the lip of Green's glove, then fell harmlessly to the ground, forcing home the tying run and sending up Jim Gentile, who may have the bat taken out of him here in order to set up a bases-loaded situation for Gus Triandos, who has doubled twice and singled. Ah, the wheels are turning here in Baltimore! The last one is intentionally wide to Gentile and here comes Triandos with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Gus has doubled twice and singled in 4 at-bats and there's nowhere to put him. The count is 3-1 on Gus, everyone's awaiting the pitch from Moore, here it comes... BALL FOUR! THE ORIOLES WIN IT!!!
Brandt gets a warm welcome at home plate, while Ray Moore is the loneliest of the lonely right now. One out to go, then a drop in center field of the would-be 27th out and a bases-loaded walk rally the Birds to a gift victory tonight, 6-5. Orioles extend their win streak to 2, while snapping Minnesota's 2-game streak to open the season. Wilhelm gets credit for the win, evening his record to 1-1, Moore with the gut-crushing loss. In the 9th for Baltimore, 2 runs, 2 hits, 1 error, 3 left. The final score, the Orioles, 6 runs, 9 hits, 1 error; Minnesota, 5 runs, 10 hits, 2 errors.
